What we can learn from results

salve Reader!

Many students get a surprise result in January. Perhaps your mocks didn't go as expected, or perhaps your efforts have paid off with an Oxford offer (sorry if you applied to Cambridge: there are still 8 days to go!).

I see both sides of this January coin. One day, I receive an email from a student with an offer to read Classics at Jesus College (btw, well done if you are reading!), the next I get a call from a parent who did not expect a disappointing Latin result and is now scrambling to find a Latin tutor at the last minute.

What do results really tell us? They guide us on what to do next.

The offer holder will have learnt what went well and plan ahead for the June papers. It is a matter of amplifying efforts and meeting the offer.

The student who did not do well in the mocks will want to reflect on their approaches and plan better for the real test.

I want to meet families where they are. If you are not sure your child is ready to get the result they deserve in June, let us talk.

For those looking to sit GCSE Latin in 2026, my Final Sprint programme is now open for registration. There are only 4 seats, so make sure to speak to me early to avoid disappointment.

For everyone else, here is a reminder that results are not a predictor of what will happen next: they are information to help us plan, improve and reach our goals. A bad result, well examined, can lead to great achievements.

salve Reader! As a tutor, I take every opportunity to get back in the hot seat, and this week it came in the form of an invitation to participate in Nightschool with Geoff Lloyd, live on Virgin Radio. Let me tell you: it was not perfect, but it was SUCH a laugh. And that, to be honest, is the way forward in a world increasingly dominated by perfectly curated bland AI content. salve Reader! I hope this seething time of year is allowing you some fresh air and mental rest. I am not going to wallow in the drama of the season, but I would like to acknowledge a moment that can be equal parts heartbreaking and uplifting: saying goodbye to a set text. Yes, saying goodbye to a set text can be very hard (and yes, even if it is Cicero!). This week, I am teaching the 2026 Tacitus and Herodotus for the last time, and I am putting away resources in their files, making space for...
