Love Classics, choose Classics!

As one school year wraps up and I start preparing for the next, I get to speak with students at the end of their journey to uni, as well as those at the very beginning. One thing is clear in these conversations: the sooner you take the plunge and start truly learning classical languages, the better.

If your student is in years 6-9, this is the time to give them a chance to interact with the world of Latin and Classical Civilisation, and start building a strong foundation. My Monday KS2 and KS3 courses are open for registration only until the 10th of July, so please make sure you book this sooner rather than later!

If your student is interested in Greek, I will be teaching beginners on Tuesday (pre and post GCSE) and intermediate students on Thursday. I highly recommend students prepare for the Intermediate Certificate in Classical Greek, which leaves the door open to a GCSE and can be used towards UCAS applications - a fantastic bonus to a course that is in itself great fun!

For GCSE students, I have set up a Latin Gym on Friday afternoons. This is exactly what it sounds like: a place to build fluency and consolidate vocabulary by reading, listening, writing and speaking.

For many students taking GCSE and A-Level, one-to-one tutoring is the best option. If this is the case for your learner, please make sure to contact me as soon as possible, as only a limited number of slots are still available for 2024-2025.

To reserve your space in any of these courses, reply to this email, and I will arrange a meeting with you to ensure you are exactly where you need to be.

July Newsletter salve Reader, As I went on to write this newsletter, I realised there has been quite a gap since the last one. Oooops! Or, as the Romans would say: eheu! No excuse, but it has been far from quiet here: dedicated students kept me on my feet, and the work we have done together will shape my offerings for the summer and beyond. And you may have noticed a change in colours... and even the logo! But that's not all. My new website will be better and more organised for sharing...

salve! I am often asked questions like "Why is Latin still being taught?" or "What is Latin for?" This is no wonder. In the past, plenty of people were taught Latin as if it were a game of Sudoku: here is a puzzle, here are some rules and off you go: figure it out. Indeed, why would one want to engage in that?! Languages are tools for communication, and people communicate through conversation and storytelling. Although some may love the challenge of solving puzzles, solving puzzles is often...

The last couple of weeks have been very busy getting everyone set up for revision, but I wanted to make sure I share my thoughts about how to succeed at this hectic time. Revision is not something you just sit down and start doing: revision takes planning, commitment and a whole lot of paper!!! Here is why: Without a plan, stress and exhaustion will quickly kick in. Without commitment, it is impossible to reach your goals. If you rely on quizzes and highlighters, the knowledge is going to...
