10 Mistakes to avoid in GCSE Latin exams

I have been very busy organising the new sections for my Latin GCSE self-paced revision course

- yes, even a little bit while on the lovely island of Sardinia!

In case you wonder what type of person is thinking about examinations during holidays, I must say that it is precisely thanks to studying Latin that I developed a love for history, languages and exploration, which has led me to the me to the most amazing places, like the alluring archaeological remains you are seeing on the picture. Naturally, I would like Latin to be a source of fun, not pain, for young students!

Anyway, as I was exploring this fantastic island and the sea nearby, I was also thinking about making Latin exams a less painful part of the learning experience. There was a recurring theme: students need to be told how to avoid the most usual mistakes.

So, now that I am back in the office and marking some of the many GCSE papers I am getting as part of mocks revision, I have decided to go live next Monday to talk about avoiding key mistakes and making sure a 9 is on the cards. If you would like to attend, just go to the preview and click on the "notify me" link. I will also take the opportunity to answer your questions live and open registration for the new extended revision course.

Make sure you come and find out all about it! If you cannot make it, you can also email me your questions ahead by replying to this email.

Revision is not something you just sit down and start doing: revision takes planning, commitment and a whole lot of paper!!! Here is why: Without a plan, stress and exhaustion will quickly kick in. Without commitment, it is impossible to reach your goals. If you rely on quizzes and highlighters, the knowledge is going to...

Ana Martin and Joanne Kaminski at BETT conference

Exploring new tech with Joanne Kaminski at Bett Last week, I attended the Bett festival of technology in education, and I was astounded by the new immersive technologies — I will leave my thoughts on AI for another week, but watch this space! This got me thinking about connecting with Latin and the world of the Romans in our modern lives: it is easier than ever, and you do not even need sophisticated technology to get immersed. But how do you motivate a teenager to practise some Latin and...

"felicem nativitatem et annum novum faustum felicem tibi exopto!" ("I wish you a happy Christmas and a happy prosperous new year!") Christmas greetings from Torre del Breny I will keep this email short, as today is the first day of Christmas celebrations in Catalonia, where I am visiting family and friends: I just wanted to send a quick email to let you know how much your support means to me: working from an office on my own could be a lonely job, but having dedicated and happy students, and...
